The Start
I think like many people on here I am a bit tired of the fact that the Internet has been taken over by giant cooperations that are focused on making money. I am slightly too young to know the time before the web but old enough to see how it changed. I was never really active on social media and abandoned the ship(s) over the years and came to the conclusion that it is not good for humanity in the current form. I learned about how the Internet started and what the great Tim Berners Lee (and others) had envisioned back in the day and I sometimes wonder if we all live in the wrong timeline. I love technology and obviously there is great potential here, so I got excited when I learned that this place exists. A small, kind of hidden place where the web is made by people and actual creativity. So I wanted to give this a try and set up my own silly neocities site.
I am a tiny bit proud of the progress I've made so far. I know, how I did things might be dirty and my design is kind of trash, but you gotta start somewhere, right? And I only had to research small details and there was no AI involved, which seems to be a win these days. In general I want to create this site on my own. I am debating if I should use a small framework like hugo to streamline the site and make it more flexible, but for now I am happy to just rely on stone age technology here.
Using neocities cli is pretty cool! I am just a bit confused, because $ neocities push should upload a directory recursively, including subdirectories. However, it still uploads all those files in the root directory of neocities' webspace which means my file structures like ./styles/styles/styles/style.css will break because the links don't match anymore. So for now I switched to the flat hierarchy, and adjusted my links to not have subdirectories. I don't like this because it is messy and a pain once I have more content on the site, but directly uploading from my terminal is very cool and even allows for some cool automated features at some point.
Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong here! Yes I did..
First Updates
As things go, I changed back some of yesterdays changes. Somehow I was a bit blind on the recursive upload of $ neocities push because it actually just does exactly what it should. So I switched back to directories for styles and blog and whatever.
I also added my mandatory under construction GIFs but i refuse to admit how long it took me to make them render. Remember kids, it's src="" not href="" for images.
I also added a bit of responsive styling, so my site uses the full screen width when visited on mobile. But obviously there's still a lot to do and I probably won't write about every change here. Overall I still think my site lacks soul when it comes to styling. It is very plain and empty. I don't know if that is the influence of modern web design or just the state of the project. I had to build a basic structure and didn't really get to adding the sparkles. When looking at other neocities sites they are way more maximalist and messy - in a good way. I want to be more bolt when it comes to that, but it will grow over time, so have some patience.
